5 Ways to Cheer Up When You Feel Gloom and Doom

Let’s face it—some days feel like you’re stuck in a never-ending loop of “meh.” The sky looks a little too gray, emails a little too overwhelming, and the sound of someone cheerfully humming in the next room makes you question everything. Welcome to Gloom and Doom Land, where the WiFi is spotty, and the only thing on the menu is mild existential dread.

Now, before you start overanalyzing every life decision you’ve ever made, let’s talk about how to lift the fog. Because while feeling down is perfectly normal, staying down for too long is like trying to drive with the emergency brake on—frustrating and completely unnecessary.

We aren’t entitled to time, so every moment spent in gloom is a moment stolen from joy. Choose wisely, because joy is always waiting. It’s easy to get caught up in the weight of the world, the never-ending to-do lists, or the gray, blah feeling that sometimes sneaks in uninvited. Life doesn’t pause while we sit in the fog of doom and gloom. It keeps moving, and so should we. The good news? There are simple, effective, and even hilarious ways to shake off the funk and reclaim the joy that’s rightfully ours. Here are five ways to turn things around when you’re feeling a little (or a lot) blah.

Here are five ways to shake off the gloom and get back to being your best self.

1. Allow Yourself a Dramatic Moment, Then Snap Out of It

Sometimes, you just need to let yourself fully commit to the drama before you can move on. So, go ahead! Throw yourself onto the couch like you’re in a soap opera, sigh deeply, and stare at the ceiling as if the meaning of life is written there.

Give yourself exactly ten minutes to wallow. Play the saddest song you know. Stare out the window and pretend you're in a movie montage. Wonder if anyone really understands you.

And then? That’s it. Scene over. Get up, shake it off, and redirect your energy. Your starring role in The Gloom & Doom Chronicles has officially been canceled.

2. Move in a Way That Feels Ridiculous (Or at Least Slightly Joyful)

Exercise? Yes, yes, we know it releases endorphins. But let’s be honest. Sometimes the idea of a “real” workout feels about as appealing as reorganizing your garage. So instead of forcing yourself into a structured fitness routine, move in a way that feels delightfully pointless.

  • Dance dramatically to the most absurd song you can find.

  • March around your house with authority, as if you are on an important mission (even if that mission is just returning a coffee cup to the kitchen).

  • Attempt yoga, but only the stretches that make you feel fancy.

The point isn’t perfection. It’s to trick your body into remembering that movement = energy = feeling better.

3. Call, Text, or Bother Someone Who Gets You

When you feel blah, your first instinct might be to retreat into your cave and ignore the world. But here’s the thing: gloom thrives in isolation. So, reach out to a human who gets it. Reach out to someone who will listen, make you laugh, or at the very least, send you a hilarious GIF in response.

And if human interaction is just too much at the moment? Talk to your pet. Read aloud to your plants. Open the window and say hello to the universe. Just… put yourself in a position to feel connected to something outside of your own head.

4. Change the Scene, Change the Mood

Ever notice how your brain loves to loop the same gloomy thoughts when you’re in the same space for too long? That’s because our surroundings reinforce our mindset. Often, a simple change of scenery is all you need.

  • Switch rooms. Work from a different chair. Stand up and make an unnecessarily grand exit, even if you’re just moving ten feet.

  • Step outside. Take some deep breaths of fresh air.

  • Go somewhere new, even if it’s just the other side of town.

Your brain responds to novelty. Give it something new to focus on.

5. Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To (Yes, Even Small Things Count)

When everything feels heavy, it helps to plant little pockets of joy ahead of you. You don’t need a grand, life-changing plan—just something to anticipate that reminds you better moments are ahead.

  • Plan a coffee date with a friend who makes you laugh until you snort.

  • Order a book you’ve been meaning to read (or, if you’re feeling fancy, go to an actual bookstore and soak in the joy of being surrounded by stories).

  • Write down one small thing you’re looking forward to tomorrow. (I love my morning coffee in my favorite mug.)

Hope isn’t always big, dramatic, or obvious. Sometimes, it’s just about stacking small joys on top of each other until the light breaks through.

Listen, we all have gloomy days. That’s just part of being human. But the trick is to keep moving forward, one tiny step at a time. So, next time you’re stuck in the doom spiral, pick one of these five things and give yourself a gentle nudge toward the light.

And if all else fails? Deep breaths, a little perspective, and maybe a cupcake. Cupcakes never hurt.
